FTC Autonomous: Turn Right 90 Degrees with the IMU

Give the robot a sense of direction: describe the Control Hub mounting, establish zero yaw, turn toward −90 degrees, and stop inside a safe tolerance.

POWERING ON for a measured turn

  1. Keep the Driver Station DISABLED while the team checks the robot and IMU mounting.
  2. Place the robot on the floor at the center of a taped test area with turning clearance on every side.
  3. Remove hands, tools, cables, and loose parts from the robot and test area.
  4. Call out “POWERING ON!”
  5. Pause while everyone moves behind the safety boundary.
  6. Visually confirm that nobody is touching or reaching toward the robot.
  7. Select INIT and START only after the safety captain confirms the area is clear.

After the turn, press STOP and confirm DISABLED before anyone crosses the boundary or approaches the robot.

What students practice

Students identify the robot’s agreed front, match the Control Hub logo and USB directions to the physical installation, observe yaw, and explain why the program resets yaw only after the robot is level, square, and still.

They then trace a feedback loop: measure the current heading, find the shortest signed error, choose turn power, and repeat until the error is within the two-degree tolerance or the timeout safely ends the attempt.
